Chinatown was the location of the historic Incheon Landing during the Korean War. The neighborhood still retains the horrible scars of war. The story “Chinatown” describes the gritty life in Chinatown through the eyes of the narrator, a nine-year-old girl, and how she grows both physically and emotionally amid the ruins of war.
Children were the only ones who lived near them and paid attention to them in this neighborhood called Chinatown. Although we had no contact with them at all, those who lived in the two-story houses on the hill fueled our imagination and curiosity.
Interview by Korean literature professor Bang Min-ho
The mother had eight children, her grandmother never had a baby of her own, and the women in Chinatown lived by selling their bodies to men. There weren’t that many good life options for women in that place. The girl grows up watching those women living such depraved lives. The story ends with the girl experiencing a physical change that signals puberty. I believe she welcomes her womanhood by vowing not to live her life like those of her mother or the women in Chinatown.
When I woke up from the nap, mother had managed to push out her eighth baby although it was an awfully difficult birth. In the dark closet, I called for my mother out of incomprehensible despair and helplessness. Then I put my hand inside my clothes and found out the identity of the muggy heat that was gripping my whole body like a sticky spider web.
It was my first period.
