Geomungo Virtuoso Heo Yoon-jeong

2017-01-03

Black String is a crossover band featuring Western and Eastern musical instruments. Its performances produce the mysterious sound created by the roar of the stringed instrument of geomungo, the deep resonation of the daegeum or a bamboo flute, the rough reverberation of the percussion and the delicate echo of the electric guitar. But what catches the attention of the audience is the geomungo, the Korean six-string zither. The traditional string instrument is also used as a percussion instrument to produce incredibly deep and resonating sounds.

The music group is led by geomungo artist Heo Yoon-jeong, who has been committed to the intriguing experiment of combining Korean tradition with Western music and therefore striking a subtle balance between different cultures. This has enabled her to promote Korean traditional music and instruments in the global music scene. By highlighting the unique and universal appeals of traditional music, she continues to explore the possibilities of extending the range of the geomungo on the global stage.
