Lotte Chairman Faces Suit from Elder Brother

The former vice chairman of Lotte Holdings Japan has sued Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin and Lotte Holdings executives, seeking to nullify the company’s decision to dismiss him.

Former Vice Chairman Shin Dong-joo said in a news conference Thursday morning that he filed a compensation suit against Hotel Lotte and Hotel Lotte Busan for ousting him.

He also said that along with his father Shin Kyuk-ho, the founder and General Chairman of Lotte Group, he applied for a court injunction allowing him to peruse and copy ledgers of Lotte Shopping.

The former vice chairman insisted that it was illegal and illicit for his younger brother and Lotte Group chairman, Dong-bin, to have managerial rights with a smaller ownership of shares in Lotte Group.

The former vice chairman revealed a letter of attorney given by his father, saying that he was entrusted with the authority to take any necessary action for the suits.

Announcing a plan to file a separate suit against Lotte Holdings in Japan, Shin Dong-joo added that his father also lodged a suit with a Japanese court to invalidate the company’s decision to dismiss him.

The former vice chairman established a corporate body called SDJ Corporations to prepare for the suits and held the news conference at the Westin Chosun Hotel, not a Lotte Hotel.

This is the first time the former vice chairman has made a public appearance, except for interviews with KBS, since a family feud over managerial rights erupted among the Shin brothers in July.
