A court has rejected a request to detain former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, who is accused of inciting insurrection.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled against Hwang's detention on Friday, saying prosecutors had failed to prove the defendant was a flight risk or was likely to tamper with evidence.

Special counsel Cho Eun-suk’s team had sought Hwang's detention on charges of inciting insurrection and obstruction of official duties and investigations.

The former minister called for the elimination of pro-North Korea forces and those involved in election fraud, whom he said had destroyed the country, on Facebook on December 3 of last year, the day former President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law.

In a separate post, Hwang called for the arrest of National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik and then-People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon.
