As Seoul seeks the authority to enrich uranium and reprocess spent nuclear fuel, the government plans to discuss revising the two allies' nuclear agreement with Washington.
First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo said during a plenary session of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee on Friday that internal U.S. procedures will require additional negotiations on the matter.
The vice minister said both sides have a firm resolve to allow Seoul to enrich uranium and reprocess spent fuel, but that the necessary legislation would also require legal review in South Korea.
The comments come after Washington approved Seoul's push to build nuclear-powered submarines and expressed support for its push to enrich uranium and reprocess spent fuel for peaceful purposes in a joint fact sheet outlining the results of two previous summits between the nations.
The U.S.-Republic of Korea Agreement for Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation currently bars South Korea from enriching uranium and reprocessing spent nuclear fuel but does permit its "peaceful" use of nuclear power.
