A Japanese newspaper says that a Kazakh couple was likely behind the transportation of North Korea-made weapons seized by Thai authorities last month.
Quoting Thai investigators and the Associated Press, the Yomiuri Shimbun is reporting that Alexander Zykov, the owner of Kazakh air-freight company East Wing, was involved in the smuggling of the North Korean weapons.
His wife is reportedly the head of a United Arab Emirates company that owns the plane that was carrying the North Korean weapons. The plane was detained in Thailand on December 12th.
The Japanese newspaper said that at the order of Zykov, the five crew members aboard the plane gathered in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev in late July last year and agreed to take on the job of transporting North Korean weapons.
Thai authorities halted the plane for allegedly smuggling North Korean weapons when the pilot of the plane sought permission to stop over at Don Muang Airport near Bangkok.
