US Rejects NK's Proposal for War Remains Talks

The United States is rejecting North Korea’s proposal to hold bilateral contacts to resume the excavation of remains of U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War.

State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters Friday that although the excavation work is necessary, the North first needs to return to the six-way nuclear talks before such discussions can be held.

A senior official at the State Department said the North is attempting to take a detour around the six-way nuclear talks by proposing bilateral talks with the U.S. on the excavation issue. The official stressed that such bilateral talks could open only in the context of the six-nation nuclear dialogue.

The official said the same principle will be applied to other humanitarian issues.
