A government on-site inspection team left for Haiti on Friday morning to make preparations for South Korea’s dispatch of peacekeeping forces to the earthquake-ravaged country.
The chief of the inspection team said in a phone interview before his departure that the team will discuss the details of Korea’s plans for troop dispatch with key officials in the Haiti government and the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti. The team also plans to inspect candidate areas for troop bases.
The Korean troops are reportedly considering the capital of Port-au-Prince, a port approximately 50 kilometers south of the capital called “Jacmel,” and one other location.
Based on the results of the team’s inspections, the government will submit to the National Assembly in February a motion on the dispatch of South Korean forces to the Caribbean country.
The government plans to send some 220 members of the military, mostly engineers, to Haiti in early March as part of U.N. peacekeeping operations (PKO).
