Top Japanese Nuke Envoy to Head to China, S.Korea

Japan's chief delegate to the six-party nuclear talks Akitaka Saiki is expected to visit China and South Korea this week to discuss how to prompt a resumption of the long-stalled multilateral dialogue.

Japan’s Kyodo News says Saiki will visit Beijing on Tuesday for talks with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei, who is chairman of the six-way dialogue.

On Friday, Saiki is scheduled to head to the South Korean island of Jeju for meetings with Korean diplomats.

According to the top South Korean representative to the nuclear talks, Wi Sung-lac, Saiki will likely make a stop in Seoul to coordinate views between Japan, South Korea and China on the nuclear issue.

Saiki's visits come on the heels of China's recent attempts to persuade the members of the six-way talks to be more flexible in their stances.

Saiki visited Seoul one month ago for a bilateral foreign ministerial meeting.
