Russia, China to Help Prevent Clash on Korean Peninsula

Russia and China have agreed to focus on keeping the situation on the Korean Peninsula from escalating into a major clash between the two Koreas.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made an official visit to Beijing on Friday at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi. While there, he held talks with Yang, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and President Hu Jintao. The three reportedly agreed to keep the issue from escalating.

According to Russia's Itar-Tass news agency, Lavrov said the evidence that North Korea attacked the South Korean warship should be recognized as adequate by the international community.

However, he called for restraint and responsibility on behalf of concerned nations regarding a response.

On the six-party nuclear talks, Lavrov said that he's confident the talks will resume at some point but that it's too early to discuss the six-way process.
