Dispatch of Diplomat to Persuade China Mulled

The government is considering sending a senior diplomat to China to elicit their cooperation for the Cheonan sinking.

A source at the Foreign Ministry in Seoul says the government is making multi-faceted efforts for a resolute and unified response by the international community towards the North’s sinking of the Cheonan.

Vice Foreign Minister Chun Yung-wu is known to be holding discussions to visit China to this end. He held talks with the U.S. and Japanese ambassadors to the United Nations in the U.S. from May 31st to Sunday. The decision to visit China will likely be made soon.

Seoul is also mulling sending the co-leader of the joint civic-military team that probed the sinking of the Cheonan and other officials in the investigation to brief the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council at U.N. headquarters on the results of the probe.
