Japan's new Prime Minister Naoto Kan says his country will seek to build a future-oriented partnership with South Korea.

In his first policy address since taking office, Kan made the remarks on Friday regarding Tokyo's foreign policy on Seoul.

Kan expressed its full support to South Korea regarding the sinking of the Cheonan naval vessel, saying that the North’s action is unforgivable.

The new prime minister also said he would strengthen relations with Asian countries while regarding the Japan-US alliance as the cornerstone of Japan's diplomacy.

Kan added he is considering nurturing an East Asia community by enhancing ties with Japan's neighboring countries in various areas, including politics, economy and culture.
