2 Koreas Brief UNSC on Cheonan Sinking

South and North Korea each gave briefings to the United Nations Security Council on the sinking of the warship “Cheonan.”

The South began briefing UNSC members on the results of its multinational probe that finds North Korea responsible for the incident.

In a closed-door two-hour meeting before the 15 council member states, South Korea presented results and evidence from the scientific investigation, such as parts of a torpedo propellant.

Using visual aids and computer simulation results, the investigation team explained how it arrived at its conclusion that a North Korean torpedo sank the Cheonan vessel.

After the UNSC met with South Korea, North Korea briefed the council, firmly denying the South’s probe results and saying that Pyongyang is the victim of this incident.

North Korea is attempting to persuade its UNSC veto-wielding allies, China and Russia, who are lukewarm to the findings on the Cheonan issue.

The briefings by the two Koreas are critical components of the UNSC’s review of the Cheonan issue.
