Former Indonesian justice minister Marzuki Darusman has been appointed the next U.N. Special Rapporteur on North Korean human rights.

He will replace Vitit Muntarbhorn, whose tenure expires this month.

Darusman is currently the working group co-chairman for the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism. ASEAN is a geo-political and economic organization of 10 Southeast Asian nations.

The United Nations Human Rights Council will announce the appointment on Friday.

Muntarbhorn was appointed special rapporteur in 2004. However, he has never visited North Korea due to opposition from Pyongyang.
