A newly-discovered document says the United States made no special preparations immediately prior to the outbreak of the Korean War, despite having detected suspicious movements by North Korea’s military.

The document was presented by the Korean Cultural Center at the South Korean Embassy in the U.S.

According to the document, Washington said in a top secret report dated June 23rd, 1950, or two days before the North invaded the South, that the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff had concluded that South Korea had no strategic value and therefore it would be inappropriate to provide further financial support to the nation.

Meanwhile, the document also showed that in a report dated February 1956, the U.S. Pacific Command said that according to intelligence acquired between October 1949 and June 1950, the North Korean military may have had intentions to attack the South.

The document was revealed as the cultural center and the National Library of Korea are introducing documents related to the Korean War that belong to the United States National Archives and Records Administration as part of a special event marking the 60th anniversary of the Korean War.
