China Respects Relevant Laws on Mt. Geumgang Tourism

China has reportedly told South Korean authorities that it respects relevant laws on the suspension of tourism to the Mount Geumgang resort.

The South Korean government had asked for a restriction on Chinese tourist visits to Mount Geumgang in North Korea.

Experts question whether this stance indicates China’s willingness to accept South Korean demands.

The Unification Ministry holds that North Korea, Chinese travel agencies and other parties should comply with the contract signed by the North and the South's Hyundai Asan Corporation, which has business rights to tourism at the Mount Geumgang resort. It also believes the bilateral agreement between inter-Korean authorities should be respected.

Amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula following the sinking of the Cheonan naval vessel, North Korea froze the assets of Hyundai Asan's key tourist facilities in Oegeumgang in late April.
