China Agrees to UNSC Response on Cheonan

China has reportedly agreed to adopt a U.N.-level statement condemning the March 26th sinking of South Korea's “Cheonan” naval vessel.

A senior South Korean government official said during a visit to the U.S. on Thursday that the U.N. Security Council is working on the details of such a statement, confirming that China has agreed to such a move.

Asked about whether the UNSC will issue a presidential statement on the Cheonan incident, the official said that the content is what matters most and that the form is an issue that will follow.

But the UNSC statement is known to be less critical than a similar one adopted in a Group of Eight summit last week.

The G-8 statement strongly condemned the sinking of the Cheonan without specifically mentioning North Korea.

A Seoul-led international investigation team concluded the warship was sunk by a North Korean torpedo.
