UNSC Chairman Urges Resolution or Statement on NK

The chairman of the U.N. Security Council has reportedly said that North Korea should be condemned for the sinking of the "Cheonan" naval vessel.

A diplomatic source at the U.N. said that Claude Heller, the UNSC president and Mexico's ambassador to the world body, on Wednesday held an unofficial meeting with representatives of UNSC nations and asked the council to adopt a resolution or a statement condemning the North.

In the meeting, Heller reportedly briefed the UNSC on the reports on the Cheonan cases presented by South and North Korea.

The UNSC chairman stressed that the council could hold the North responsible for the case as the incident has raised tensions on the Korean Peninsula and has endangered peace and security in the region.

Meanwhile, China reportedly maintained its cautious position on adopting a resolution or a statement condemning North Korea.
