‘S.Korea Pressuring China on Cheonan’

A Chinese news outlet says South Korea is pressing Beijing on North Korea’s sinking of the “Cheonan” naval vessel.

The Huanqiu Shibao, an organ of China’s Communist Party, quoted a Chinese expert as saying that Seoul is pressuring Beijing by revealing a possible plan to conduct a joint military drill with the U.S. in the Yellow Sea after a U.N. decision is made on how to respond to the Cheonan incident.

The expert told the newspaper that South Korea’s plan suggests the South will request that a U.S. aircraft carrier be sent to the Yellow Sea if China doesn’t support U.N.-initiated penalties against North Korea. A Seoul-led international investigation has implicated the North for the sinking.

A number of Chinese media outlets have urged South Korea to withdraw its plan to conduct a joint military drill with the U.S. in the Yellow Sea, saying that such a move will infringe on the national interests of China.
