A diplomatic source reportedly believes that the United Nations Security Council has prepared an interim report on the sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” naval vessel that describes the incident as an “attack.”
Japan’s Sankei Shimbun said that most of the two-page report is a summary of the discussions held by the UNSC thus far on the issue, but that in the last section it used the words “attack” and “condemn.”
However, the document reportedly did not declare who was responsible for the attack on the South Korean warship.
The Japanese newspaper says the report is an unofficial summary by U.N. Ambassador Claude Heller of Mexico, who had chaired the UNSC until the end of his term as chair in June.
Sankei reported that China did not raise particular objections to the content. The Japanese newspaper interpreted this to mean that although China is still strongly opposed to denouncing North Korea, the discussions may progress if China accepts the Cheonan incident as an “attack.”
