The European Parliament has adopted a resolution condemning North Korea for its human rights conditions.
In the resolution adopted Thursday in Strasbourg, the European Parliament said that North Korea is refusing to cooperate with U.N. human rights mechanisms and continues to be involved in systematic extrajudicial killings and arbitrary detentions. The resolution also noted that the North continues to reject visits by the U.N. special rapporteur on the North’s human rights situation.
The resolution said that the North currently has incarcerated more than 150-thousand political prisoners at some six detention camps.
The resolution also urged Pyongyang to immediately and permanently suspend public executions.
This resolution comes three weeks after the European Parliament adopted a resolution denouncing the sinking of the “Cheonan” naval ship that a Seoul-led international investigation shows was perpetrated by the North.
The last time the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the North’s human rights conditions was in June 2006.
