Chinese diplomat He Yafei says China does not want to “pour oil on the fire” in reference to discussions at the United Nations on the sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” warship.

The diplomat met with reporters at Chinese missions in Geneva early Friday, where he said that Beijing does not condone any action hindering peace on the Korean Peninsula.

However, he said that escalating tensions in regards to the Cheonan must be avoided at all costs and that China doesn't want to see another war on the peninsula.

He also urged North Korea to return to the six-party nuclear talks.
