The Education Ministry says the South Korean team took fourth place overall at the 2010 International Mathematical Olympiad held at Astana, Kazakhstan from July second. The team grabbed four gold medals and two silvers at this year's competition.

At this contest, some 517 students from 98 nations vied against each other. South Korea sent eight members led by a professor at a Korean university.

The event is considered to be the Olympics for mathematical intelligence where the top math talents compete. South Korea has steadily made third to fourth place over the past five years.
