'US Unlikely to Seek Further Sanctions on NK'

The United States is reportedly unlikely to pursue additional sanctions on North Korea.

A diplomatic source in Washington said Wednesday that the U.S. has apparently decided to put off seeking further sanctions against Pyongyang, including a freezing of assets, for its involvement in the sinking of the “Cheonan” as the U.N. Security Council has adopted a presidential statement denouncing the attack.

The source said the U.S. had previously mentioned seeking additional sanctions against Pyongyang in an apparent bid to pressure China to join efforts to come up with a way to address the Cheonan issue at the U.N.

The source said Washington plans to closely watch for developments in the North’s attitude before making decisions on additional sanctions as Pyongyang has shown conciliatory gestures following the Security Council presidential statement.
