Civic Group Urges Japan to Apologize for Sexual Slavery

A Korean-American civic group urged Japan to take responsibility for its wartime atrocities during World War Two.

The Korean American Voters' Council held a news conference at the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday where it read a statement urging Japan's official acknowledgement of and apology for the sexual slavery conducted by its wartime Imperial Army.

The council urged Tokyo to act on the calls included in a resolution the U.S. House unanimously adopted in 2007. The council was a leading force in realizing the adoption of the resolution.

On Monday, council president Kim Dong-suk also visited congressional offices with some 30 Korean students and parents asking for Congress to pursue follow-up measures.

Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen also spoke at the news conference, saying that Japan has yet to apologize to the victims three years after the resolution was adopted.
