A Japanese daily says the United States is seeking to make official a U.N. report that concludes North Korea is to blame for the sinking of the “Cheonan.”

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun Tuesday, Washington requested that the Security Council regard a report by the U.N. Command, which concluded the sinking of the Cheonan was the result of an intentional and planned action by North Korea, as an official document.

The Japanese paper said the U.S. apparently made the request in a bid to make clear that Pyongyang is to blame for the naval incident.

The daily’s report comes after the U.N. Command submitted to the Security Council an independent assessment on the Cheonan case, saying the North had violated the Korean War armistice by attacking the South Korean ship.
