The newly appointed chief of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party's reform committee says he will find a way to navigate who to work with among members of the conservative party.
In his inaugural press conference as chairman of the LKP's emergency task force at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Kim Byong-joon said he is against a backward-looking personnel reform.
He did not elaborate on the specifics of his remarks but speculation is that he will not assess lawmakers based on their attitudes toward impeached former President Park Geun-hye.
Kim said he hopes every incumbent member of the LKP will be ruled fit to remain with the party, adding that it is possible to part ways with those who do not share the party's core values.
Kim, who served as a prime minister for the Roh Moo-hyun administration, dismissed conjectures that he may use his position within the party for his own political ambition and clarified he will not run for the 2020 general elections by himself. He also reiterated his promise to retire from politics after finishing his role as the head of the LKP reform committee.
Asked about the duration of the reform committee, he said it should run through at least early next year.
