Friday has set another day time high record in South Korea but the heat wave gripping the nation is expected only to worsen.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), temperatures as of 4 p.m. hovered above 35 Celsius degrees in inland areas in Gyeongsang Provinces.

The mercury in Changnyeong in South Gyeongsang rose to as high as 39-point-three degrees, the highest level across the country on the day as well as for the year so far.

The previous day time high record this year was only set on Monday at 38-point-three degrees in Yeongcheon in North Gyeongsang.

A KMA official attributed a heat wave rally to a relatively early ending of the monsoon season this year compared with previous years. The official added heat trapping in the atmosphere due to the lack of wind is also to blame for the hot weather for 10 consecutive days.

The KMA expects the heat wave to continue until at least the end of this month.
