South Korea plans to build a second ice-breaking research vessel of its own and begin a pilot navigation along the North Pole Route.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on Friday disclosed a basic plan to strengthen its Arctic-related activities, which were drafted in coordination with eight other related government agencies.
It consists of multiple measures to help the country tap into the North Pole's many potentials.
The plan will be carried out through the end of the Moon Jae-in administration until 2022 and include four major strategies such as those for economic cooperation with other countries and strengthening research activities.
Under one such measure, the government will strengthen cooperation with Russia on modernizing Russian shipyards to help South Korean shipbuilders expand their business opportunities.
Seoul will also try to create more opportunities for its shipping and logistics firms by launching a trial navigation along the North Pole Route and build an information center on the North Pole Route.
