South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha is pushing for a series of bilateral meetings in the United States with her counterparts from around a half dozen countries.

A senior official of Seoul’s Foreign Ministry revealed the plan in a meeting with reporters on Friday while announcing Kang will accompany President Moon Jae-in on his upcoming trip to New York set to begin on Sunday.

The official said Kang plans to stay in New York longer than the president and return at the end of this month, adding she is seeking to hold bilateral talks with foreign ministers of six or seven countries during her stay.

Kang is expected to deliver briefs on the outcome of the latest inter-Korean summit and call for support for denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

She may possibly meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Attention is being drawn to whether Kang will also meet with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho.
