The U.S. government has revealed the identities of the first two American soldiers recovered from Korean War remains handed over by North Korea.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday on Twitter that the remains belong to Army Master Sgt. Charles H. McDaniel and Army Pfc. William H. Jones.

Trump wrote, "These HEROES are home, they may Rest In Peace, and hopefully their families can have closure.” The president’s tweet was followed by official confirmation from the U.S. Defense Department.

According to the Pentagon and U.S. media outlets, McDaniel was a medic with the 8th Cavalry Regiment Medical Company and went missing after attending an attack against the Chinese military near Unsan, North Pyongan Province in the North in November of 1950.

Jones was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, and also participated in a mission against the Chinese military in Kujang, North Pyongan Province in November of 1950 before he went missing.

The U.S. Defense Department plans to hold negotiations with the North to resume the repatriation of U.S. war remains left on the Korean Peninsula, while continuing its work to identify the 55 boxes of remains handed over by the regime early last month.
