The Washington Post(WP) has positively assessed this week’s inter-Korean summit for setting the tone for what could become serious talks between the North Korea and the United States.

Columnist David Ignatius made the evaluation on Thursday, saying that many analysts doubted the agreements produced from the first-ever North-U.S. summit in June had any real substance, but people are beginning to see the “first signs of what a serious accord would look like.”

He said the latest inter-Korean summit produced agreements on some basic essentials of a “real denuclearization process,” including the North's agreement to accept international inspectors to monitor the destruction of one of its test sites. He pointed out it will be a first step toward the broader inspection process that will be essential for any verifiable pact.

Ignatius also cited the regime’s agreement to dismantle its main nuclear weapons facility at Yongbyon and said the Trump administration seems willing to some “corresponding measures” as a confidence-building step.
