A new survey finds that Korean fried chicken is the most popular South Korean dish in foreign countries.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs conducted an online survey on locals of 16 major cities across the world and found that some 13 percent picked Korean fried chicken as their most preferred Korean dish followed by kimchi and bibimbap.
The survey found that bulgogi was favored in North and Central America while Europeans preferred bibimbap and Northeast Asians chose samgyeopsal. In Southeast Asia, kimchi was the most popular Korean dish while japchae was the favorite among locals in Oceania, South America and the Middle East.
According to the survey, kimchi was the most frequently consumed Korean dish apparently due to a growing interest in healthy foods amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The survey also found that more foreigners are aware of Korean cuisine. More than 57 percent of the surveyed said they knew about Korean food, which is up from 54 percent posted in 2018 and 54-point-six percent posted in 2019.
