North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reportedly called for strengthening the country's nuclear war deterrent and military capabilities.
According to the ruling Workers' Party mouthpiece Rodong Sinmun on Wednesday, Kim made the call as the eighth party congress wrapped up the previous day.
In his closing remarks at the final session, Kim reportedly said that the country needs to do everything to build the strongest military capabilities, while further strengthening its nuclear war deterrent.
Kim also called for efforts to fulfill a new five-year economic development plan put forth during the congress.
Kim's remarks included no messages toward South Korea and the United States.
North Korea also said it will convene the Supreme People's Assembly in Pyongyang on Sunday to discuss what was put forth throughout the event.
The eighth party congress, the first in nearly five years, continued for eight days, which is the longest after the fifth congress was held for 12 days in 1970.
