The head of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics organizing committee says a decision will be reached before March 25 on whether or not the sports event will take place this summer.
Yoshiro Mori said in an interview with a local media outlet on Friday that the world will know if the Olympics will be held if the torch relay, which is scheduled to begin on March 25, takes place.
Mori was quick to add that the event will not be postponed a second time.
His remarks come a day after British daily, The Times, said the Japanese government has privately concluded that the Tokyo Olympics will have to be cancelled because of the coronavirus, and the focus is now on securing the games for the city in the next available year, which is 2032.
International Olympic Committee(IOC) chief Thomas Bach, for his part, has said the virus-delayed Tokyo Olympics will be held this summer and there is "no plan B."
In an online interview with Japan's Kyodo News on Thursday, Bach said that at this moment, there is no reason whatsoever to believe that the Olympic Games in Tokyo will not open on July 23.
