South Korea has welcomed the inauguration of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, expressing hope that the country's alliance with the United States will develop further.

A spokesperson from Seoul’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the government welcomes the official inauguration of U.S. Secretary of State Blinken following Senate approval. 

The spokesperson said the government expects the South Korea-U.S. alliance will develop further with the inauguration of Blinken, who has a deep understanding of bilateral relations and Korean Peninsula issues, as well as ample experience and excellent leadership.

Blinken was confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday as the country's new top diplomat and sworn in later in the day. 

During his Senate hearing, Blinken said the Biden administration will work with traditional allies and review its entire approach to North Korea.
