Hyundai Motor will recall over 81-thousand electric vehicles at home and abroad to replace their battery systems following recent fire incidents.

The global recall includes 81-thousand-701 units of the Kona electric vehicle, the IONIQ EV and Hyundai's eco-friendly bus Elec City. The plan is estimated to cost the company one trillion won.

Following interim investigation findings, Seoul's Transport Ministry said Wednesday that the recall will begin on March 29.

The carmaker promised to swiftly carry out the process to minimize customer inconvenience.

In a notice on its website, Hyundai said the recall will take place in successive order in line with the battery supply schedule. It also advised drivers of Kona and IONIQ to limit the maximum charging rate to 90 percent to lower the risk of fire until they are able to get the batteries replaced.
