Typhoon Omais is pouring heavy rain onto Jeju Island and southern coastal regions as it approached within 230 kilometers of Seogwipo City in southern Jeju on Monday afternoon.

The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) said as of 3 p.m., Omais was traveling north at 45 kilometers per hour from waters around 233 kilometers southwest of Seogwipo. With a central pressure of 998 hectopascals, the typhoon's maximum wind speed stood at 65 kilometers or 35 knots per hour.

Around 20 millimeters per hour of rain was pelting down on South Gyeongsang Province as of 4 p.m. with heavy rain advisories also issued four Gyeonggi Province and Chungcheong provinces.

Omais, a U.S. contribution from the Palau word meaning “wandering about,” is the 12th typhoon of the year and the first typhoon to directly hit the Korean Peninsula in 2021. It is expected to pass Jeju Monday night and land on southern coastal regions at midnight.

Meanwhile heavy precipitation grounded 52 flights to and from Jeju on Monday as of 4 p.m. while 18 others out of the island were delayed.
