The head of a U.S. House Foreign Affairs subcommittee downplayed concerns over the credibility of Washington’s security commitments to allies, including South Korea.

Rep. Ami Bera, head of the subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia and nonproliferation, made the remarks on Wednesday at a virtual conference organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

His statement came as the Biden administration’s decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan has raised concerns that the U.S. may eventually do the same in South Korea.

Bera said he would tell the audience in South Korea to “not read too deeply” into Biden’s decision, stressing that South Korea is a totally different country from Afghanistan.

Calling it one of the most developed democracies in the world, Bera added that Seoul and Washington have a long geopolitical strategic relationship, and U.S.’ security commitments are extremely important to members of Congress.
