Chanthu, the 14th typhoon this year, is expected to pass through waters off the south coast this Friday.
The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) said Monday that the storm is currently heading north at 27 kilometers per hour from south of Shanghai. However, from Monday evening to early Thursday, it’s likely to remain stagnant near the Chinese city.
The agency forecast that Chanthu will turn direction toward South Korea Thursday morning and pass through the northern parts of Jeju Island on Friday morning before reaching waters off the south coast.
With the typhoon moving northward, the agency projected that Jeju Island will see up to 500 millimeters of rain through Wednesday. It also forecast heavy rainfall for parts of South Jeolla Province and South Gyeongsang Province.
Coastal regions of Jeju and South Jeolla Province are also set to see heavy winds from Monday. The typhoon's maximum wind speed currently stands at 40 meters per second.
