United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken extended greetings to the Korean people on the occasion of the Chuseok holiday in a press statement on Monday.

In the statement, Blinken wished Koreans around the world a safe and joyous Chuseok, adding that while this year’s celebrations will be subdued, the pandemic has strengthened the importance of family and friendship.

He also stressed that ties between the American and Korean people are built on shared democratic values and the commitment to work together to address the most pressing issues of this century.

Blinken then stated that the alliance between the U.S. and South Korea is essential to promote global peace, security and prosperity.

The U.S. State Department has released press statements marking major Korean holidays and commemoration days in the past, including for Chuseok and Independence Day.
