The presidential office on Thursday convened a standing committee meeting of the National Security Council and discussed ways to push ahead with a process to declare a formal end to the Korean War, as proposed by President Moon Jae-in.

In the meeting chaired by national security adviser Suh Hoon, officials agreed to push for talks to resume dialogue with relevant nations, in line with Moon's remarks at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

In a keynote speech at the 76th annual assembly held in New York Tuesday, President Moon said a formal declaration will help usher in an era of reconciliation and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula.

He proposed that either three parties, consisting of the two Koreas and the United States, or four parties, with the addition of China, come together and declare that the war is over.

The Korean War armistice was signed in July 1953 by military commanders from the U.S., representing the UN Command, North Korea, and China. No peace treaty was ever signed, and the two Koreas technically remain at war.
