The White House on Thursday convened a virtual conference of major semiconductor manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics, to discuss the ongoing global chip shortage and its significant impact on other industries.
According to the White House, U.S. National Economic Council(NEC) Director Brian Deese and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo co-hosted the conference, where the impact of the delta variant of COVID-19 on the global semiconductor supply chain and the industry’s efforts to raise transparency were also discussed.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the semiconductor shortage has been on U.S. President Joe Biden's mind since he took office.
According to Bloomberg, related companies will be asked to provide the U.S. Department of Commerce with “voluntary” information about the supply chain within the next few weeks, but many of them are reluctant to provide information detailing their supply-and-demand structures.
The latest meeting, the third of its kind held to discuss the issue since April, brought together representatives of Samsung, TSMC of Taiwan, as well as American tech and automaking giants including Intel, Apple, Microsoft, General Motors and Ford Motor Company.
