3.3 Magnitude Earthquake Occurs Near Heuksan Island

An earthquake with a magnitude of three-point-three occurred near Heuksan Island in the country's southwestern waters on Sunday.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the earthquake was reported at 1:01 a.m. in waters about 81 kilometers south-southwest of Heuksan Island in South Jeolla Province.

The depth of the epicenter was estimated at 20 kilometers.

The KMA said that the tremor is thought to have caused no damage, adding it was followed by a micro one-point-seven magnitude earthquake six minutes later in waters 79 kilometers away from the location of the first quake.

Including the latest tremor, 70 quakes with a magnitude of two or higher have struck the country since the beginning of the year.
