The main opposition People Power Party(PPP) has asked the inaugural chief of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials(CIO) to be fair and thorough in its investigations into corruption cases involving “living power.”
PPP Floor Leader Joo Ho-young made the request to Kim Jin-wook, who paid a visit to the National Assembly on Tuesday, days after the parliament adopted a confirmation hearing on him.
Joo called on the CIO to successfully investigate “living power,” which he said the prosecution is unable to do, and help the prosecution restore its standing so the opposition party’s concerns over the new agency’s independence and neutrality would prove groundless.
The conservative party had waged a months-long boycott last year over the ruling bloc’s bid to launch the agency, which it argued will be used to oppress political opponents of the Moon Jae-in administration.
Ruling Democratic Party(DP) Chairman Lee Nak-yon also met Kim at the parliament on Tuesday and asked him to keep in step with the government’s institutional reform of powerful agencies and help correct wrongful practices within those agencies.
Kim, a former judge, received a letter of appointment from President Moon last Thursday.
