NEC to Sternly Respond to Fake News with Law Enforcement

The National Election Commission says it will step up cooperation with related agencies such as the police and prosecution to block the spread of fake news ahead of the presidential election.

The election watchdog held a related meeting Thursday and examined response measures to fake news, slander, false propaganda and unfair online election coverage. It also discussed ways of prevention and clampdown.

The meeting was attended by experts from 12 agencies including the police, prosecution, Facebook Korea, Kakao Corporation, domestic portal Naver, the Korea Journalists Association and the Korea Internet Self-governance Organization.

Participants shared the view that fake news distorts the public's correct judgement and inflicts an irreparably negative image on presidential candidates.
