Political Parties Clash over Early Constitutional Revision

The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) and minor Justice Party have criticized the Liberty Korea Party(LKP), People’s Party and Bareun Party for rushing to revise the Constitution.

DP Senior Deputy Floor Leader Park Wan-joo said Thursday that political calculation is the reason the three parties are hurriedly seeking a constitutional revision.

Justice Party Chairwoman Sim Sang-jeung called the three parties’ agreement to seek an early constitutional revision a "coup-like idea" that has neglected the sovereignty of the people. She said the agreement is a collusion by the three parties' prime minister hopefuls who see little chances of winning in the May presidential election.

Meanwhile, the three parties are exerting active efforts to push forward constitutional amendment.

LKP Floor Leader Chung Woo-taik said if DP lawmakers who support the amendment join their efforts, a referendum could be held on the constitutional revision at the same time as the presidential election, citing that back in 1987, it took only 40 days to amend the Constitution.

People’s Party Floor Leader Joo Seung-yong said amending the Constitution is about determination and not about content because the issue of constitutional revision has been sufficiently reviewed in the political sector.

Bareun Party Floor Leader Joo Ho-young said a constitutional revision is the most significant way to stamp out deep-rooted evil, stressing that South Korea must again go forward with the amendment.
