DP Launches Probe on Spread of Unconfirmed Primary Results

Unconfirmed data presumed to be the results of presidential primaries for the Democratic Party(DP) have been widely spread via social networking services(SNS), causing a controversy within the main opposition party.

Various materials which are claimed to be the voting results began to spread rapidly online starting late Wednesday after on-site votes were cast across the nation.

Yang Seung-jo, the deputy chairman of the party’s election management committee, issued an apology for the controversy. But he said the materials that have spread throughout the Internet cannot be trusted by any means and are groundless.

The party’s presidential contenders have strongly blasted the latest incident.

The DP adopted an open primary in which registered voters including the party's delegates cast their ballots at polling stations across the nation on Wednesday. Registered electors can also vote on their mobile phones or on the Internet. More than two million people registered to vote in the DP's presidential primaries.

The party plans to hold regional primaries starting from Monday until April third when it will hold a national convention to nominate its presidential candidate.

Under the party's election rules, voting results that combine on-site and online voting, will be announced sequentially in the order of regional primaries. If no candidate wins a majority, a runoff among the top two finishers will be held on April eighth.
