Presidential Candidates Hit the Road 6 Days before Official Campaign Begins

The campaign for the upcoming presidential election will officially start next Monday following a two-day candidate registration period over the weekend.

Major presidential candidates, however, are already busy on pre-campaign trails to drum up public support.

The Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Moon Jae-in on Monday announced a pledge for small- and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs), promising that if he is elected he will make the government pay the salary of one of every three new hires.

He also promised to create 150-thousand jobs over the next three years.

Moon plans to hit the road on Tuesday to meet voters in South Gyeongsang Province, Busan and Ulsan.

Hong Joon-pyo of the former ruling Liberty Korea Party(LKP) has pledged that he will create a country that never frustrates the poor.

Regarding the internal voices calling for the expulsion of impeached ex-President Park Geun-hye from the party, Hong expressed his opposition saying Park is already politically dead.

“I don't think [expelling Park from the party] just because it can benefit my presidential campaign is right thing to do.”

Hong plans to visit the Imjingak Pavilion in Paju, Gyeonggi Province near the Demilitarized Zone(DMZ) on Tuesday to check the South Korean military’s security posture. Later in the day, he will attend the party’s election committee to check on its preparations for the election.

Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party said that as a president, he will try to ease the entrepreneurial regulations to prepare the country for the fourth industrial revolution while strengthening monitoring on adverse outcomes of the deregulation.

He also called for the swift passage of the so-called Regulation-Free Zone Act pending at the National Assembly.
