[Gallup Poll] Moon 41%, Ahn 30%

Democratic Party's Moon Jae-in has widened his lead in the latest opinion poll as People’s Party's Ahn Cheol-soo lost about seven percentage points from the week before.

In the Gallup Korea poll on one-thousand-four people between Tuesday and Thursday, 41 percent chose Moon as their choice for the next president.

While Moon gained one percentage point from last week to keep the top spot, Ahn came in second with 30 percent.

The former ruling Liberty Korea Party's Hong Joon-pyo came in third with nine percent support followed by minor progressive Justice Party's Sim Sang-jeung at four percent. Yoo Seong-min of the Bareun Party secured three percent.

Runner-up Anh’s approval rating saw an eleven-percentage point drop from respondents in their 50s as 40 percent maintained the preference.

Gallup Korea said Ahn suffered from the intensified arguments against his qualification and negative campaigning that followed the beginning of the official campaign period.

Among the respondents who identified themselves as moderate, Moon gained two percentage points more than the previous poll to receive 42 percent while Ahn lost six six-percentage points to 34 percent.

The survey had a 95 percent confidence level with a margin of error of plus or minus three-point-one percentage points. Details on the latest survey are available on the Web site of Gallup Korea or the National Fair Election Survey Deliberation Commission (www.nesdc.go.kr).
